I remember in second grade; my elementary school pen palled another school. Every week we would take a chunk out of time out of the learning agenda to write letters to our pen pals at another school. My pen pal was a boy named Justin and we were able to share some interesting facts about each other. To be completely honest the only thing I remember about
Justin was his love for video games. That is all he would talk about. However, there was one time in his letter, or should I say envelope, there was a paper machete flower. I often told Justin about my favorite flowers and in response he gifted me something that he thought I would like in addition to the letter.
I haven’t really thought much of the second grader that I used to pen pal, but I do think about how personal it was to add something additional to the letter. Letters don’t always have to paper with words on them, there can be additional items as well that can either be of the person’s taste that you are writing or of your own interest that you would like share. Adding things to a letter can be difficult because it needs to be small and flat, however I have complied a few categories with a few lists that may help you add something special to your letters.
PAPER PAPER PAPER
One of the easiest and simplest ideas to adding additional items to a letter is using paper.
Paper can be as plain as you would like it or as unique as your heart desires. Add your favorite comic strip from Sunday’s paper to your letter or add a section of a map that is memorable to both you and the person receiving the letter. Another thing that can be added is a customized or bought bookmark. Whenever the person that you wrote to the letter reads and marks their spot, they will always be reminded of your letter and kindness. Add in prints that you bought or found on Pinterest, even better add your own pieces of art. There are so many things that you can with a piece of paper.
What is your favorite…?
One thing that we do to get to know someone is to tell them about our favorite things. What’s your favorite song, movie, color, food, etc.. Instead of telling who you’re writing about your favorites, show them and have them enjoy it as well. It might be a little tricky, but you can share the small things. Think of your favorite tea or hot chocolate. Teabags and cocoa
packets fit perfectly in an envelope. Samples of your favorite scent can be used by wither getting a sample or spraying the sent of paper. Adding the sheet music of your favorite song is creative and to even expand on that idea, you can cut out a picture of your Spotify code to show your favorite playlist or song at the moment.
Collectables and trinkets
One of my favorite things to add to letters to pen pals are little trinkets or collectables.
Nothing too big, but yet still exciting to get. When writing international pen pals – adding coins to letters is a fun way to share your country and your culture. Another thing is enamel pins or embroidery. Things that can be displayed but won’t take up too much space. Even washy tape or cross stitch thread can be shared, especially if you and your pen pal enjoy crafting.
Endless Possibilities
When it comes to adding something special to your letters, the possibilities are endless. Letters are already personable but sharing things that you find to be interesting and important to you just add more meaning to your letters. Next time you send a little, try sending something extra and share a little bit more about yourself.
